Cortona is an important Etruscan city, whose testimonies can be seen in the Museum of Etruscan Academy and City of Cortona (MAEC) and in the Archaeological Park. The Tabula Cortonensis and the Etruscan Chandelier are much celebrated. There are many artists who were born here over the centuries, including the painters Luca Signorelli, Pietro da Cortona and Gino Severini. Their artworks can be found and appreciated in many of Cortona's churches. The Franciscan presence in this city was also very important. In the 13th century, St. Francis founded the hermitage of Le Celle here. Today the city is a well-known tourist destination, thanks also to the quality of its typical products, such as Syrah wine.

THE MAEC

Most of the Etruscan treasures of the Valdichiana (and many more) are housed in the Museum of the Etruscan Academy of Cortona (MAEC). The Academy was founded in 1727 with the aim of rediscovering and promoting the Etruscan origins of the area. Together with the Museum, the Archaeological Park, with its large "Tumuli del Sodo" and its 2 "Tanelle," is fundamental in reconstructing and understanding the social development of the Etruscan community in Valdichiana from the sixth century. B.C. until the Romanization.

Art and culture

As the birthplace of Luca Signorelli, Pietro da Cortona, and Gino Severini, rich in their characteristic views, Cortona represents the most important center for the artistic heritage of Valdichiana. We present it via a path linked to the presence of Saint Francis of Assisi in the Cortona area.

Cortona

Excellence and Territory

The Cortona Wine Consortium, the words of its president, Stefano Amerighi, the business ethics and traditional techniques, all make the wine here unique. There is also a brief tour of the Diocesan Museum, a treasure chest of art in the town of Cortona.

Cortona

The Diocesan

The Diocesan Museum houses world-class works from various churches in the Cortona area. Above all, there are the works of Beato Angelico. There is the beautiful Triptych and the Annunciation, a wonderful example of Renaissance art, in which we can recognize the first rudiments of perspective within an artwork.
